Start the new year by shredding unwanted pounds

To help raise awareness about how people can protect themselves against fraud and identity theft, TD Canada Trust and Shred-It have joined forces to bring a community shred event to four TDCT branch locations in Oakville. Open to both customers and the general public, this one day event aims to encourage everyone to protect their identity by shredding old documents containing personal information instead of throwing them out.

Shred-it, A Securit Company, is the world's leading on site document destruction company with over 140 branches operating in 16 countries. Shred-it trucks are equipped with custom-built shredders that can efficiently destroy everything from confidential paper documents to CDs. Founded in 1988, Shred-it currently services over 150,000 global, national and local businesses and organizations worldwide.

Working From Home Adds Convenience But Poses Risks

Whether it's the shortened commute, a hectic work schedule or the desire to spend extra time with family, more Americans are choosing to work from home or telecommute. Adding to this trend is the popularity of laptop computers and PDAs, which allow Americans to work at any time from any location, especially the home.

In a national survey of nearly 500 full and part-time working adults(1), 45 percent of adults said they work from home one or more days per week and 73 percent said they have a home office or work area at home.

As more professionals opt to bring work home and maintain an office area within the home, two risks become prevalent: properly disposing of work- related documents and keeping a working area safe for kids and pets.

More than one-third of respondents said they dispose of work-related documents at home and nearly 60 percent said they own a paper shredder.

Local recycling center awarded as 'cleanest' in metro area

If cleanliness really is next to godliness, the halos of the employees of Show, Inc. are glowing a little more brightly these days.Show's recycling depot at 425 W. Wells was recently named the cleanest of a dozen collection sites by the Metropolitan Environmental Trust, said Collette Beil, director of marketing and job development."Our staff and employees work very hard to keep the site clean and safe," Beil said. The site, at which a variety of recyclable materials may be dropped off, including newspapers, magazines, office paper, aluminum cans, glass and No. 1 and No. 2 plastic containers, is quickly becoming one of the M.e.t.'s busiest, Beil said.As a result, the center is expanding its hours this year, staying open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays."During the week we're bringing in so much more, we need that extra time to catch up," said Beil.Recycling is becoming more profitable with today's higher oil prices, since petroleum is a major component of plastic."We used to get (plastic containers) and they would be $120 a ton," Beil said.
