| Getting rid of your shredding
January is the month often associated with attempts to shed extra Christmas pounds, holiday plans for the year ahead and, if the finances allow, hitting the sales. But it is also the time when the dreaded Christmas credit card bills and bank statements start dropping through the door. After they have been dealt with the security conscious may opt to shred these documents, which is seen as the best way of stopping fraudsters getting hold of your personal information. Contrary to popular belief, the remains of a shredding session can be recycled. Residents in Croydon who benefit from the council's kerbside collection scheme can put their strips of waste paper straight into their green boxes. The shredded documents can also be taken to any of the borough's recycling facilities, including the Factory Lane centre in Waddon and the Purley Oaks reuse and recycling centre in South Croydon - as well as at many smaller drop off points around Croydon.

Mulch ado about your old trees
People can have their Christmas trees shredded and used to beat weeds in a bid to help their towns and villages look attractive long after the festive season. South Somerset District Council has arranged eight shredding dates where residents can drop off their used Christmas trees. The mulch will then be spread on the district's shrub beds. Cllr Jo Roundell Greene said: "People in South Somerset have become very aware of the need to recycle by putting their little brown boxes out to be collected each week. "This is one more service we're offering that will increase recycling in the area and save used trees going to landfill." Shredding takes place from 9am to 3pm on: Saturday, January 6, Lyde Road recycling site, Yeovil, and Crowshute car park, Chard; Monday, January 8, Shudrick Lane car park, Ilminster, and Lyde Road recycling site, Yeovil; Tuesday, January 9, Station Road car park, Crewkerne, and Cocklemoor car park, Langport; Wednesday, January 10, Memorial car park, Wincanton, and Prigg Lane car park, South Petherton.
